TdIPV and MenACWY - Combined Tetanus, Diphtheria and Poliomyelitis vaccine and the Meningitis ACWY vaccine

Offered to students in Year 10

The Dorset School Age Immunisation Service are pleased to confirm that these vaccinations will be provided in schools to help protect your child against Tetanus, Diphtheria, Poliomyelitis and four types of meningococcal bacteria (groups A, C, W and Y) that can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These diseases are very serious and can kill, especially if not diagnosed early. Your child will receive these two vaccines in Year 10, so that protection against these diseases will continue in adult life.

Further information from the NHS about these diseases, the vaccines given to protect your child against them, and any side effects is available here:

HPV vaccine

Offered to students in Year 9

Girls and boys aged 12 to 13 years are offered the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine as part of the NHS vaccination programme.

The HPV vaccine helps protect against cancers caused by HPV, including:

  • cervical cancer
  • some mouth and throat (head and neck) cancers
  • some cancers of the anal and genital areas

It also helps protect against genital warts.

For further information go to: http://www.nhs.uk/hpv

In England, girls and boys aged 12 to 13 years are routinely offered the 1st HPV vaccination when they're in school Year 8. The 2nd dose is offered 6 to 24 months after the 1st dose.

It is important to have both doses of the vaccine to be properly protected.

If your child had their first dose in Year 8, when it is time to have the second dose in Year 9 you will be sent a courtesy letter from Dorset Healthcare explaining that your child will be having dose 2 in the coming weeks.

Children in Years 9, 10 and 11 who have not had any doses will be invited to consent, this includes any children who are new to the school.
